One or more of the following procedures may need to be performed in order to prepare the mouth for a denture:
- Jawbone re-shaping and smoothing – Alveoloplasty
- Removal of excess bone – Tori removal
- Maxillary tuber (upper back jawbone) reduction
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Gum tissue procedures
The surgical preparation of the mouth before placement of a prosthesis or denture is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.
Some patients require oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort and fit. A denture sits on the jawbone and gum tissue, so it is very important that the bone is in proper shape and size, and the gum tissue is adequate. Sometimes the jawbone is uneven, sharp or excess bone is present. For the best fit of a denture, the jawbone may need to be re-shaped, smoothed or the excess bone may need to be removed.
Dr. Hegedus will review your particular needs and discuss the available treatment options with you during your consultation visit.
