Tooth Implant
Dental implants are great option for patients missing natural teeth because dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Among all the teeth replacement options, in appearance and in function, dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth. Dental implants allow people to enjoy a healthy and varied diet. With a sense of renewed self-confidence, many people rediscover the excitement of an active lifestyle shared with family and friends and the chance to speak clearly and comfortably.

Dental implants are made of materials that are compatible with human bone and tissue. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes, creating strong foundations for artificial teeth. Small posts (abutments) that protrude through the gums are then attached to the dental implants. These posts provide anchors for artificial replacement teeth. Based on patient needs, a single tooth, a bridge, an over-denture or a full set of replacement teeth are fitted to the dental implants.
Dental Implants Presentation
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.
Dental implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. First visit: Dr. Frederick Hegedus will evaluate you first, to determine whether you are a candidate for dental implants. You will be evaluated based upon a number of things including your overall health, dental health, jawbone quality, oral hygiene and life-style. There are various options for dental implant placement: a two-stage procedure, a single-stage procedure, a delayed or immediate dental implant placement. Dr. Frederick Hegedus will evaluate you for each of these options. After the dental implants are inserted into the jawbone, there is a waiting period before the final replacement teeth can be fitted to the dental implants. During this time, the dental implants are gradually bonding (integrating) to the jawbone. This can take three to six months. During this time you should be able to wear temporary teeth attached to your dental implants or wear temporary flippers or dentures. Dr. Frederick Hegedus will discuss these options with you.
Two-Stage Procedure
First stage: Dental Implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following the surgery, the dental implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures during this time. Second stage: Once the dental implants have bonded to the jawbone, the second stage begins. Your dental implants will be uncovered and small posts (abutments) that protrude through the gums will be attached to the dental implants. Dental Implants will act as anchors for the artificial teeth that will be placed over these posts.
Single-Stage Procedure
Single-stage dental implant placement does not require a second-stage procedure to uncover the dental implants before artificial teeth are placed, because the dental implants and the posts (abutments) are placed together at the same time. After the dental implants have bonded to the jawbone, the artificial teeth are placed over the posts.
Delayed Dental Implant Placement
Implants are placed two to six months after tooth extraction allowing the jawbone to heal.
Immediate Dental Implant Placement
There are situations where the dental implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures, and possible bone loss at the site of the extraction.
Solutions for Different Indications
Single tooth replacement
A single dental implant with a crown is used to replace one missing tooth.
Multiple tooth replacement
A fixed bridge can replace more missing teeth and may require only two or three dental implants.
All tooth replacement
A complete dental rehabilitation replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The required number of dental implants varies depending upon which type of complete replacement is recommended. A complete replacement can be removable or fixed. A fixed complete replacement requires more dental implants than a removable replacement. The number of dental implants required depends on your evaluation. Your fixed replacement will be completed with crowns and/or bridges. A removable complete replacement (over-denture) attaches to two or more dental implants; these dental implants help to anchor or stabilize the removable over-denture.

Why dental implants?
When you lose one or more teeth – whether it’s a new situation or something you have lived with for years – implants are the closest replacement in appearance and in function, to natural teeth. Your natural teeth absorb a biting pressure of up to 540 lbs. per square inch. Long-time denture-wearers can often absorb no more than 50 lbs. per square inch. Dental implants, when properly placed, can withstand 450 lbs. per square inch of biting pressure.
Other Considerations for Dental Implant Placement
If your jawbone is not ideal for dental implants, ways of improving outcome, such as bone grafting (see Bone Grafting section), or soft tissue grafting, may be recommended. There are certain conditions that require extra precautions for dental implant placement. Dr. Frederick Hegedus will discuss these with you during your consultation visit.
What are the options for anesthesia?
The majority of dental implant procedures and bone grafting can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
Do Implants Need Special Care?
Dental implants require special individual care. Proper brushing, flossing, rinsing and regular check-ups are critical to the long-term success of your implants.
